Ceramic tile is a traditionally popular flooring material, and the range of colors and patterns that can be achieved with a tile floor is enormous. Besides the fact that tile is largely unaffected by water, part of its appeal is the fact that the floor finish can be extended up the walls almost seamlessly, making the junction between the floor and the wall easier to clean. Because some glazed tiles can become extremely slippery when they get wet and because some tiles are harder than others, there are some kinds of tile that are more suitable than others for use on a bathroom floor.

In general, high-gloss glazed tiles are the easiest to clean but also the most slippery. A better choice for floors are either vitreous (non-water absorbing) or non-vitreous (water absorbing) tiles with a matte or slip-resistant texture. Most tiles also have an applied surface glaze that makes them impenetrable to moisture, so non-vitreous glazed tiles are generally perfectly suitable for bathroom floors and walls. The hardness of the glaze can vary, so softer tiles are more susceptible to wear than harder tiles. Tile manufacturers have adopted something called the Mohs scale to indicate glaze hardness. A tile rated at 10 will resist a diamond scratch, while a tile rated at 1 is very easily scratched. Most tiles intended for floor use fall around 6 or 7.

Ceramic mosaic tiles (typically made of pigmented vitreous porcelain) are another good choice for floors. Because of their small size, they are typically mounted on sheets to make spacing more consistent and installation easier. They're extremely hard, which makes cutting them difficult, but they're almost impervious to staining or cracking. What makes them particularly appealing for floors is their unglazed matte surface (though they are available glazed as well), which makes them naturally slip resistant. I've had good luck using them for shower floors because their small size lets them conform to the slope of the floor, and their slip resistance makes them safer under foot. Pavers and quarry tiles also are good for bathroom floors, though they both will need to be sealed to help prevent straining.

No matter what kind of tile you use, it puts more demands on floor-system installation than any other type of floor finish. Tile isn't flexible, and neither is grout, so a floor system has to be rigid enough to support whatever loads are encountered in the bathroom without appreciable flexing. Concrete slabs are ideal for tile installations, whether cast on-grade or as part of an above-grade radiant floor. If you're planning a tile installation on a conventionally framed floor (either with dimensional or engineered floor joists), you'll need to make sure that the floor meets minimum standards for deflection under load, and that the substrate thickness is adequate.

The question of how to restore the finish on kitchen oak cabinets has been raised several times in some forums where I participate. There really is no one best answer for this question as the final decision lies with your personal taste and interest. What I present below is only my view based on my experience and readings on the subject matter.

The option you choose to restore the finish depends on the kind of finish you have. It also depends on the age of the cabinets. For example, you might even have to sand them and apply lacquer.

If you do not want to change the color of the cabinets then you might not have to refinish them. If you are thinking of using some oil product just be careful not to use oils that will attract grime and dust and fail to offer a long-term solution. Alternatively you can just use a rub-on finish or method and water. The latter doesn't have a negative effect on the oak wood.

If the cabinets have some lacquer that has flaked off like splinters on the grain of the wood or one of the cabinets have splintered effect then you will have to sand to bare wood and apply a new finish like Danish oil. Sanding requires you to be patient but it is well worth it.

Another suggestion to the question on how to restore the finish on kitchen oak cabinets is to slightly sand and re-coat over what is already there. But in this case I suggest you start with a sample area where it is not visible to everyone.

Use this area as a test and if you are happy with the results then you can do the whole kitchen oak cabinets. As you test the sample area watch out for peeling or finish clumping like oil on water. If these happen then you should consider something else.
